August 30 gave the world Shackleton's rescue of his men, and this one-page printable comic tells the whole day in panels.
The hero story is Ernest Shackleton's rescue of his men in 1916, after the Endurance was crushed by Antarctic ice. Shackleton worked for months to rescue his stranded crew, and on August 30 he returned to Elephant Island aboard the Chilean ship Yelcho and rescued the 22 men waiting there. Remarkably, every member of the Endurance expedition survived. Around it are twelve more true events from the date: the crackdown on Christians in Nanjing (1616), Samson Occom being ordained (1759), the town of Houston being announced (1836), the Second Battle of Manassas ending (1862), Lenin being shot (1918), Leningrad's last rail link being cut (1941), MacArthur arriving in Japan (1945), and Azerbaijan restoring independence (1991). A born-and-died strip closes the page.
Print it for morning work, a history lesson, or an August 30 study. One page, no prep.
